Creating worlds from scratch

Description

How to build new worlds and make them real? Mostly I work as a visual development and environment artist: for animated projects, series or games. In simple words - a mood-maker, as the work of an artist rarely comes down to some single task. But no matter which design is on the track, the beginning is always challenging - and there’s no difference if it’s a new client\company, or it’s a second project with the team you are already working with, in a company you are already used to. A new project is a new world, and usually the world without any form. A game or a movie, a cartoon style or realism - they all need time to get their shape and hue, and the task of the art team to create this shape. So here we are - with a vague idea from a producer in front of a blank page of the new imaginative world. What to do first? One of the first questions I usually ask - what mood they want to see? What feeling do they want the viewer to get from this world? Even if you’re the first person in the art team in this project, or there’s no project at all yet, and you also an art director, usually the producer has an answer at least to this question. It’s a starting point from which everything slowly rolls out.
