This and that and a little bit of this too
Description
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” This is how early the world starts asking us to make decisions and pressuring us to specialise. And if you grow up to be an artist, you’re urged to find your style, to focus on what you do best and do it over and over until you are the north star in your field: that’s the recipe for success. But while it works for some, it’s a path for frustration and disappointment for others. I spent so much time trying to find my one skill that I almost specialised in not specialising. Curiosity led me to try my hand at many different fields, with varying degrees of accomplishment. #Jack of all trades, master of none”, I kept hearing. But what if there is a middle ground? What if you can be successful neither as a specialist nor a generalist, but by finding the right balance and combining your skills to create your own constellation? In this talk, I will explore the merits of versatility, the challenges and rewards of a cross-disciplinary approach to an artistic career and the triumph of figuring out the unique combination of talents that makes you unique.
