We at Trojan Horse was a Unicorn (THU) are sincerely committed to transparency and taking the highest care in protecting the privacy of our users and customers. As you use our website, we want you to be fully aware of how we use your personal information, as well as how you can protect your privacy.

Please read this Privacy Notice carefully (we wrote this with love), as the use of our website implies its consent. We tried to make it simple, "human-speaking" and accessible to all.

Our Privacy Notice may change from time to time, and when it does, we will announce it on the THU website. If the changes are significant, then we will provide a more prominent notice, which will be posted on this website before the changes become effective, and also send a newsletter. Each time a user accesses the website, the current version of the Privacy Notice applies. The date will identify the latest updates made.

Please note that this Privacy Notice does not apply to third-party websites (also called "Third Party Services" below), such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, and Vimeo, that we do not control, even when you access them through our website and services. Please make sure to read the Third Party Services Privacy Policies carefully so that you know how they collect, use, and share your information.

Information collected by THU (or on THU's behalf)

  1. The information you provide to us

    1. When you create an account, use our services, edit your user area, purchase a ticket, enter a challenge, and register for an event

      We collect the following types of personal information:

      Some of these fields may be mandatory if you want to submit an entry or participate in a THU initiative or event. We may also require additional information besides the profile fields. For example, for the Golden Ticket Challenge, we may request proof of nationality and of enrollment in a higher education institution as proof of eligibility/ compliance and in order to administer these contests. In case we require extra information or documentation we will let you know so you can make an informed decision and opt out of proceeding any further.

      • Your name (in the form we ask your first and last name)

      • E-mail address

      • Country of Origin/ Nationality

      • Education

      • Work Experience

      • Portfolio, websites, and social media links 

      • Profile image

      • Images of your work 

      • Cover photo

      • Birthdate

      • Gender

      • Gender Pronouns

      • Bio 

      • Skills

      • Billing address and VAT number for invoice purposes

      • The last four digits of the credit card number, and credit card expiration date (if you are not paying with PayPal). This information is solely used to process your orders and help us provide information when solving issues regarding orders and purchases.

    2. Content you create. This includes any content that you upload to the service. When you engage with the THU platform, whether through chatting, writing comments, or uploading posts, images, or submissions (including drafts), we handle your data with care, ensuring its confidentiality and security. Moreover, we don’t store streaming content of private meetings (such as 1:1 mentorships or job interviews) when we use external services (Video SDKs by Daily platform). We do not engage in the sale or unauthorized use of your personal information. Your data is solely utilized to enhance your experience on our platform, operating and managing our business operations and/or improving our products, services, and event experience. In the rare event that we need to access or moderate your content, such as removing inappropriate comments or ensuring compliance with community guidelines, we do so with strict adherence to our privacy policy. You may also participate in surveys where you can provide feedback on the services and we store this information for future considerations and improvement.

    3. When you attend an event or THU activity
      • We take photographs and film all THU events and activities. Before, during, and after the events in several different locations. We use these photographs, videos, and audio only for THU Communications and Campaigns purposes. These videos are shared on THU social media channels and platforms, websites, newsletters, APPs, and other digital communication supports such as Press releases and Presentations.
      • By participating in a THU event or activity you are automatically giving permission to use your images. If you have any questions about your images being used, please contact us at [email protected]

    4. Customer support
      • When you contact us through our customer support emails and chat, we may keep a record of your contact information and the content of the communication for later reference. These records help us provide better customer service.
    5. You may participate in surveys where you can provide feedback on the services and we store this information for future considerations and improvement.
  2. THU Main Event App

    To have full access to your THU APP, you’ll login with your THU account or create one. It’s the same one you use to purchase your ticket and manage your profile.

    When installing an APP on your mobile phone or tablet, you’ll exchange information with the operating system app store. THU has no access to that information.

    THU can only see statistical and anonymous data, so we can learn and improve our APP.

  3. Deleting your account and the right to be forgotten

    If you wish to delete your THU account and your personal information, please send us an email to [email protected], and we will do this. Proceeding with your THU account deletion and data anonymization will result in Loss of Access to all THU Platform services, content, and functionalities associated with your account; Permanent Data Removal, which includes profile information, badge, activity, and engagement; Irreversibility of this action and the inability to restore content and Impact on our Platform Services and future limited access. You must always confirm your intention before we proceed. We will reply to any questions regarding privacy matters in 72 hours.

  4. Information we automatically collect

    1. Analytics

      When you visit one of our websites, we automatically collect the following types of information, some of which is anonymous:

      We use analytics services to help us track the efficacy of our websites to help us improve our Services.

      If you do not want Google Analytics to collect and use information about your use of our Services, then you can install an opt-out in your web browser (https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout).

      • Information about the devices you use to access the Internet (such as the IP address and the device, browser, and operating system type)

      • URLs that refer you to our Sites and the dates and times of your visits information on your shopping behavior on our Sites (e.g., page views, paths you take through our Sites, etc.)

      • General geographic location information (e.g., country or city) that shows where you are when browsing our Sites

      • Search terms that you enter to reach our websites, or on our websites to find products

      • And the fact that you opened one of our emails and newsletters.

    2. Social Media Features (Sharing features)

      THU websites include social media features, such as the Facebook Like" button and Share widget, or interactive mini-programs that run on our websites. These features may collect your IP address, which page you are visiting on our websites, and may set a cookie to enable the feature to function correctly. Social media features and widgets are either hosted by a Third Party Service or hosted directly on our websites. Your interactions with these features are governed by the privacy policies of these Third Party Services.

    3. Cookies (not the crunchy eating kind)

      We automatically collect aggregate, anonymous information through cookies. Cookies are small text files stored by your web browser on your computer, phone, tablet, or other device used to browse our websites. They enable our systems to recognize your browser and to provide features such as automatic login and a faster shopping process. THU uses cookies to provide a better Experience in its Services and Products.

      This Notice does not cover the use of cookies by Third Party Services and our Partners.

      On the "help" section of the toolbar on most browsers, you will find more information and tools on how to prevent your browser from accepting new cookies, how to have the browser notify you when you receive a new cookie, or how to disable cookies altogether. Let’s put it this way, though you may disable cookies through your web browser, without them you will not be able to login to the THU website.

    4. Facebook advertising

      Some pages on our website load a "Custom Audience Pixel" from Facebook to enable targeted advertising for our products on Facebook's platform. You can read more about how this works at www.facebook.com/customaudiences/app/tos

      You can opt out of Facebook's data collection process at www.aboutads.info/choices

    5. Emails and Newsletters

      When we send you emails and newsletters, we may track whether you receive and open them to learn how to improve our customer experience, services and deliver more clear and better communications.

      When you fill in surveys, we also receive your answers and collect them to improve our services and the users' experience in THU Events and online services. We send different types of emails and newsletters:

      • THU automatic emails for when you create an account, change a password, receive invites for an event, confirmation of purchase, and invoices.

      • THU account mailing list: for THU website account users. Emails to inform you of updates on functionalities of the website and user area, updates on Privacy Notice, and other relevant changes.

      • THU mailing list: for attendees registered in THU Events or Challenges. These communications are essential to keep you updated on any changes, updates, special offers, and other necessary information regarding the events and challenges.

      • THU Newsletter: we send information about THU activities (Events, Challenges, Community, THU Store, and Tickets) and other information we find relevant to share. You can edit this information on the newsletter form.

  5. How we use Your Personal Information

    We use your collected personal information (described above) to improve our services and products. We also use your Personal Information for this:

    • provide our products and services

    • to personalize and enhance your THU Experience

    • to communicate, either to respond to your requests through customer care or to send you updates about your purchases, orders, and registrations

    • we analyze data to understand what we can improve in the customer and user experience

    • to offer recommendations, related content, and offers and campaigns about our services, challenges, events, and products

    • to allow you to participate in our events and challenges and to administer those challenges

    • for internal legitimate business purposes

  6. Transparency Notice

    As part of our commitment to being transparent, here is how we may share your Personal Information, and only as described below!
    Sometimes we need services provided by Third Party Services to offer a full service.

    • E-commerce platforms: we use Shopify for the THU Store. To improve your customer experience when you buy at THU Store we will store your data such as your email address. We do not share your information with Shopify, but some services may require the exchange of some data.

    • Payment platforms:

      • Stripe Payments Europe, Ltd is the payment gateway for orders paid with Visa, MasterCard & American Express. The parties in the transaction are the customer and Stripe. Consequently, Stripe is responsible for all related obligations, and also the recipient of the payment.

      • IfThenPay is the payment gateway for orders paid with Multibanco and are responsible for the transaction.

      • PayPal: when you use PayPal, the parties involved in the transaction are the customer and PayPal.

      • Vimeo: Vimeo hosts the THU TV volumes, and acts as the payment platform. The parties in the transaction are the customer and Vimeo. Consequently, Vimeo is responsible for all related obligations, and also the recipient of the payment.

    • Invoices: in order to issue the invoice regarding your THU purchases (event tickets and THU Store) we work with an invoice provider (mandatory in Portugal) - InvoiceExpress - with whom we share the fiscal/ financial information you provide when making a purchase or requesting an invoice. This information is not shared with any other services other than the fiscal authorities.

    • Challenge platforms:

      To collect and process the information needed to manage the Participant’s entry in the Challenge, THU uses the following platforms:

    • Delivery services: to deliver your THU Store purchases we need to share your personal information - Name, Address, and Phone number when requested, with delivery services. These services may vary according to the destination address.

    • Hosting services: we use different web hosting services.

    • Travel and accommodation arrangements, and Invitation letters: when you ask an invitation letter to THU Events, you give us permission to issue a letter with this personal information to the diplomatic entities in question:

      • Full name

      • Nationality

      • Date of Birth

      • Passport number

      • Passport issue date

      • Passport expiry date

      • THU Ticket number

      • Some other info may be explicitly requested for each case, but this is the information usually asked by diplomatic services.

    • Event badges and registrations: we may share your name and country to the company providing the printing of THU Events badges.

    • With sponsors and partners: we only share statistical/demographic data about the Tribe and attendees so our partners can create better and more specific offers.

    • Contracts, Agreements and Invoices: for the purpose of creating the contracts, agreements and invoices for our partners (Speakers, Recruitment companies, Sponsors, etc) we’ll ask for the following information: Company legal name, company representative name, fiscal address, name and position of signatory.

    • With recruitment companies at THU Events: when you apply for a recruitment, mentorship or portfolio review session, you share your name, profile, and portfolio links with the selected companies and other users (Tribe members). During your recruitment sessions, interviews, video calls, audio calls, or chats, you may share more information, such as your contacts, but that exchange will be between you and the companies.

Disclosure of your Personal Information

There are some exceptions for the disclosure of your Personal Information, and these are the ones we do not control:

  • THU will employ best efforts not to use or disclose any Personal Information it gathers from you unless reasonably required to comply with governmental, legal, or internal record-keeping requirements.

  • To comply with valid legal requirements such as a law, regulation or court order; If we are legally compelled to disclose your Personal Information to a third party, we will notify you unless doing so would violate the law or court order;
