Visual Writing

Description

Writing is the foundation of most great stories, but we all know that there are many forms of writing. Words are but a tool. A form of scribble where meaning is derived from context. A sentence might tell the same story as a quick doodle. We artists can choose the best tools to capture what our imagination seeks. From comics, to storyboards, to pre vis, to live action camera, all these tools are devices to scout and plan for the creation of story. It all starts with a sheet of blank paper and an idea. In this class, we will work with models to loosen up our story muscles by experimenting with approaches to that blank page. We will lean into the improvised, live sketch environment with a practical eye towards story development using words, cartoons, life drawing and debate. The goal of this workshop is to not only explore composition, but also valuable interpersonal skills for those that wish to operate in practical creative environments. From game studios to animation crews to writer's rooms, the sandbox of story is an improvised "yes and..." space which can be intimidating, but also exhilarating. It is important to have a good "bedside manner" when collaborating with other artists. The act of bravely facing the blank page isn't just a way to make a living as a writer, cartoonist, animator or director... it is a way of life. It is all writing. Bring drawing materials and sketchbooks.
